What to consider when you think about choosing a coach
Choosing the right coach is important. It makes a crucial difference between success and failure in reaching your goals. Based on our 30+ years of experience we’ll give you some considerations to help you choose the right coach for you.
- Setting the goal
- The first meeting
- Evaluating the coaching process
- Personal points of attention
- Coaching in the organisation
- Your goal and our coaching
1 Setting the goal
It is a critical success factor to know what your goal is when you are deciding about choosing a coach. If you don’t, or you cannot make it specific yet, this should be the first objective of your coaching.
Why is it so important to set a goal? A goal directs how we look at your current reality and determine the gap with your desired future. Once you know the outline of your goal you can start describing what you want to accomplish specifically. This makes it possible to assign intended results to the coaching project.

2 The first meeting
These ‘intended results’ serve as a guideline for the intake conversation you organize with the coach.
- The outcome of this first meeting has to be confidence in the process and in the coach. Also you should be certain the qualities and values you consider critical are part of the relationship.
- There should be a first broad outline of the results that will assist you to accomplish the goal you want to achieve.
- These objectives serve as an instruction of your coach, a guideline for the coaching process, and a measure to evaluate the process step by step.
3 Evaluating the coaching process
The evaluation that is part of each subsequent meeting should lead to effortless adaptation. This is the proof that the coaching process works well. Adaptation evolves almost spontaneously and generally without much effort or complications when the coaching connects your personal purpose with your capacities. The coaching should guide you to where you can apply your capabilities with confidence.
Naturally all this is feasible only when the ambience of the coaching is convivial and based on expanding trust, know how, and experience. This results in practical self-knowledge that enables you to respond to your situation with effectiveness and relation enhancing soft skills.
In this way the coaching process will be a joyful, beneficial, and productive progress towards accomplishing your personal and professional goals.

4 Personal points of attention when choosing a coach
Frequently the occasion to seek coaching is formed by an outside cause, such as e.g. personal feedback, professional demands related to career issues, or personal development requirements.
To seek coaching for these objectives is critically important. However, you reach personal growth and professional improvement objectives most easily when they are based on what motivates you internally.
For that reason it is best if a coaching process, next to setting the goal, begins by inquiring into what truly motivates you, before getting on with the content of the coaching process.
✔ Positive anticipation
A personal reason that should also be present is your feeling of positive anticipation about both the process and its outcome. This is hard to measure, but if the coaching feels like an obligation it is an important indicator you are probably better of with a different coach. Just trust your feelings – most often they are right.
✔ Suitable and right for you
Coaching is about finding confidence and getting a grip on the world and all its social interactions in a manner that suits you. What suits you, serves you. And what serves you always enables you too to serve someone else in what they need.

5 Coaching in the organisation
What to review when you are bringing coaching into the organisation
When you are examining if you should bring coaching into your organisation in our view you should be able to agree that the coaching will be constructive, productive, valuable, rewarding and profitable.
- Constructive, because it adds to the effectiveness of the strategic execution process.
- Productive, because it adds to the achievement of business objectives.
- Valuable, because it is aligned with and enhances the values of your organisation.
- Rewarding, because it enables the person(s) concerned to develop their professional conduct, competences and capabilities in a practical manner.
- Profitable, because it adds to the bottom line and what sustains the wealth creation in your organisation.
Coaching is a resource
Coaching in an organisation has to be considered above all as a resource that the organization provides because there is a business reason.
The business reason has to explain the case for coaching as a credible – i.e.: measurable and ascertainable – solution to the achievement of a related objective. (During the last 15 years we have developed an extensive checklist for organisations to check their considerations for seeking coaching and development. Please contact us to learn more.)
The above may perhaps sound a bit too business-like for the personal side of coaching to work. Coaching is still sometimes exclusively seen and used as a tool for personal development. However, it is our experience that both professionals and managers prefer to have the coaching objective to include a business reason as well as a personal development goal.
In our experience, this serves both the individual who receives the coaching as well as the organisation facilitating the coaching.
✔ It serves the individual in his or her professional development.
✔ It serves the organisation because the individual’s contribution to the organization is strengthened through the coaching.
Advantages of having a business objective for coaching
A business objective for coaching allows the information related to the business that comes out of the coaching to be shared in the organisation. This supports organisational change and expedites improvement efforts. The personal aspects of coaching remain of course within the confidentiality of the coaching conversation.
Coaching in business: coach/consultant
The coaches who are qualified to perform this kind of business related coaching are also tried and tested in consulting. These coaches are capable to convert what they learned during the coaching sessions into business terms that improve the strategic execution and the required adaptation to change.
Questions to ask when introducing coaching in the organisation
We advise you to consider the following before deciding about coaching in your organisation:
- What do you want to gain from coaching?
- How does this improve the business objectives?
- How do you know you gained the results you aimed for with coaching?
- What do you demand businesswise from the coach besides the usual coaching requirements?
